Alex Anas is Professor of Economics at the State University of New York at Buffalo since 1991. From 1975 to 1991 he was on the faculty at Northwestern University. He has also taught on a visiting basis at Stanford University (1981-82) and the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign (1986-88). He obtained BA and BS degrees in 1972 from Carnegie-Mellon University and the MA, MCP (1974) and Ph.D. (1975) from the University of Pennsylvania.
Dr. Anas’ research interests span theoretical, empirical and applied microeconomics, urban economics and transportation economics. He has contributed to dynamic land use adjustment; the relationships between transportation, property values and land use; traffic congestion, land use and urban sprawl; dynamic housing market models; models with dispersed jobs and formation of employment sub-centers; the theory of agglomeration and of systems of cities with intercity interactions and trade; the theory of ethnic segregation. Computable general equilibrium models of urban economies are a major continuing interest of Dr. Anas. RELU-TRAN (Regional Economy, Land Use and Transportation) is such a model that has been developed for the Chicago MSA under research awards from the National Science Foundation (1999-2005) and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (2005-2010), and is currently being adapted to the Greater Los Angeles region in the MRPI project.
